I actually used the "Rug Warriors" Handyboard way before the RIS was released.

The interactive C software from newtonlabs (www.newtonlabs.com) is fantastic.  A
little "over-the-head" for kids, but how many kids actually use the RIS is
in-question.

The ability to measure analog signals and control so many input/outputs and to be
able to configure the ports to control hobby servos make the HB so great.

I personally use both of the above as well as basic stamps for all kind of
projects.

I think they all are usefull for differnet reasons...

The Lego RIS is an ideal platform to learn about robotics. Has anyone on this
list looked into Rug Warriors? It is, also, a Lego platform but it uses the
Motorola 6811 series controller. In operation it is almost identical to the RIS
but it has more room to expand, input/output than the RIS. If anyone is
interested they might check out the MIT site, the Rug Warrior was started there
also. How about other platforms? The wheelchair was cool but as a general
purpose platform it would need some rework.
