Excellent, looking forward to the searchable, browseable version. I guess my
remaining questions are:
firstly - is this really LDraw specific? LDraw is great, but Fred's
photographs were also helpful - I wouldn't like someone not to submit an
idea because all they had was a picture. Insisting on LDraw is likely to
reduce the numbers of both contributors and viewers.
second - what about these "other factors". I seriously suggest looking at a
pattern-like organization here. Organization by part is not, for design
creation, always the point. I don't think, "How can I use this gear" I
think, "How can I make this happen" (Patterns are about reusing tested
solutions to difficult problems, pattern writing is itself a tested solution
to this very type of organizational problem.)
Anyone have news on the Constructopedia? The WikiWiki approach is an
interesting take on a similar problem.

Yes, there is: The lugnet.cad.dat.ideas group collects LEGO design
components in LDraw format. The group is archived and browseable
here:
http://www.lugnet.com/news/display.cgi?lugnet.cad.dat.ideas
Later in the year, all of the postings will be organized by topic
and
interlinked with DBs, searchable & browseable by element and other
factors.
