Greetings, I was thinking this weekend and would like to pass and idea/question on to the group. Would it not be possible to use a motor as a rotation sensor? I think my example would be more suitable as a speed sensor though. Lets say you have a (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jun-99, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) The hardest part, assuming you could find a way to read both clockwise and counterclockwise rotations, is going to be converting velocity (which is effectively what the motor will tell you) into position, assuming that is what you wanted to (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jun-99, to lugnet.robotics)

I expect that Lego has designed the RCX so that hooking up an output port to an input port directly will not damage it. Kids will probably do that just for fun sooner or later. Hooking up a motor to an input port should therefore be safe, too, as it (...) (25 years ago, 9-Jun-99, to lugnet.robotics)
