Has anyone come across any good basic mechanical reference resources?  I
have found that patent searches are a tad more complex than what I am
looking for.  I would be interested in hearing about non-Lego reference
sites (or books!!)that cover basic mechanical engineering.  Ideally, such
information would be targeted to an audience with no prior knowledge, but
would provide foundation information building to more complex concepts.
Hmm - sounds like what I am looking for is a "engineering 101" college
textbook.  O.K. anyone know of any good ones?  Here are the things I am
looking for:

Transmissions, clutches, gear ganging, cam principles, mechanical
articulation, etc.

Den Hartog wrote three books on basics, they are now available via Dover
publishing for about $15 ea. The math is pretty heady (MIT stuff).

Another one I like, but is out of print, is:

Designing Cost-effective Mechanisms
L.J. Kamm
ISBN 0-07-033569-9
? (I paid $5 for my copy)

You might want to look into basic automotive mechanics as well.
