I have connected nitinol to Lego and it can melt the ABS plastic...be

You're talking about Nitinol I assume. It works ok, the major drawback is
that of metal fatique. Eventualy the wire breaks (it's still pretty
expensive I believe). There is also a considerable thermal hysterisis in
that
it takes longer to relax for larger diameters than to contract.
I keep seeing that little robot-in-a-book in the book store based on this.
There has also been some work in the last few years in plastics that change
dimension, recoverably, via thermal or electrical stimulation. You could
probably find some useful links on google.com by using 'artificial plastic
muscle' though I haven't tried.
Two other plastics are useful as well. The black conductive foam that
regular chips are shipped in changes resistance due to pressure. It make
great gripper sensors for force feedback. It does wear out and is sensitive
to moisture. The conductive black plastic sheeting boards are shipped in is
sensitive to IR, just don't get it so close it melts.
