Has anyone tried out the Muscle Wire or electronic pistons from this site?

Seems like a good alternative to pneumatics.

How about an RCX to RS232 connection to use off the shelf components?

Check out this link.

http://www.sbsi.net/bin2/hazel.exe?client=59089090&action=serve&item=electro
nics/motor_driver_interfaces.html

MondoTronics sells a simple serial servo contol that services up to 8 motors
via an rs232 port ($49.95).  I have seen a simple version adapted for a Palm
Pilot for $89.00 that services 8 servos as well.

To get the multimotor control that you want and MANY other other devices,
all you need is a way to drive an RS232 port on the RCX.  Has anyone thought
about how this might be done?

It's actualy pretty easy. Take the analog RCX output, integrate, S&H, A/D,
serialize and then send to a MAX232 devices and wallah, RS-232.

If you were to pair the output and the input (assuming both 8-bit) you could
then have 3 bi-directional RS-232 channels.

This has some interesting possibilities in that you load 3 images of a
serial protocol handler onto the RCX and then you could use the IR link in
real-time to handle data bidirectionaly to a normal PC. In effect you turn
the RCX into a communications controller.
