I think that starting with the Lego software would be good for you to
familiarize yourself with the _basic_ capabilities. Once comfortable with
merging the mechanical engineering with the programming, I would move to
VB/Spirit.ocx, then on to one of the third-party offerings.  I think it
important not to overwhelm oneself at the start, growing into more complex
methods as you go, just like you would if you were taking a class on it.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I may be wrong.

Subject: Alternate Programming

I just purchased my first Mindstorms kit. After looking over the lugnet
messages it seems there are a lot of ways to program the RCX aside from what
Lego provides. Since I have never programmed anything before, which of the
available programs would be the best to start with? I noticed Lego has some
info on using Visual Basic and Spirit.ocx. Does anyone think that is the way
to go? Thanks.
