I also need advice of detecting the scatter.  Last week, I grabbed a potato chip
(Lays Stax) elliptical cylinder and gave it to a kid as a target.  Poor kid got
really confused by the readings he got.  He pulled me aside to ask why the US
wasn't seeing the container.  We proceeded to turn the container and found a lot
of positions where the container "disappeared".  So, I'd like to see if we can
setup US to find the cylinder all the time.

I imagine setting three US, use the center to ping and all of them to read.
What do you think?

Thanks.

Getting a return off a cylindrical or worse yet, spherical object is very
difficult. The sound reflects off in every direction, pretty uniformly, and so
little of it comes back to the sensor. I'm not sure about your idea for using
multiple sensors. It might work, but then you've used up three sensor ports.
Instead, you might try wrapping the object with tin foil. Don't try to make it
smooth, rather let it be crumpled a bit. The rougher shape will return enough of
an echo that you should be able to see your object.

By the way, a second problem with detecting certain types of objects is that
they are nearly transparent to sound. The tin foil helps with this as well.
