1. If you can no longer download the original firmware with RIS software:
a. First check your tower with another RCX.
b. If the tower isn't the problem, than it seems that your IR-channel
has suffered!
2. The RCX normally shuts down with weak batteries. Batteries cannot kill
any hardware part.
3. Unfortunately it is possible to kill the IR-channel with 3d party
software !!! I don't know ERIKA communication with the RF module, but
if they are using unbalanced RCX IR-sending with long range, a few
minutes can burn the IR LEDs or the driving transistor.
4. Unbalanced sending = not using complements whose purpose isn't only to
check the communication errors, but also to balance the number of
logical ONEs and ZEROs.
5. We have worked out a reliable IR-RF communication between RCX and PC in
our MARS (2nd) project ( www.convict.lu/Jeunes/RoboticsIntro.htm ). To
protect the IR channel, we only used short range and balanced IR at 2400
baud.
6. During our intense tests, we killed one RCX by switching on the IR LEDs
accidently while the H8 timer providing the 38kHz carrier was shut off. In
a few seconds the RCX was dead on the IR-channel and we had to replace the
IR LEDs. Normally at long range the IR LEDs are driven at high current
shortly only, because the carrier cuts it regularly. The recovery
time of any cycle is sufficient for the LEDs to cool enough... under the
condition of a well balanced protocol.

| I have uploaded a program based on ERIKA to the RCX. It didn't work properly as I have to take off the batteries to shut it down. When I tried to communicate with it again it seems that the IR is dead. Even if the rcx beeps and I can select the demo (...) (18 years ago, 1-Nov-06, to lugnet.robotics)
