It's just software - otherwise they are essentially identical.
Actually, the 1.0 hardware is the best because it has the external
power socket - which was absent from the 1.5 and 2.0 RCX.
The 2.0 set has a USB infrared tower - the older versions use RS-232.
But you can download 2.0 firmware into the 1.0 and 1.5 RCX units no
matter which tower you have.
