Robert,
I've had a lot of good luck with Energizer batteries,
but have also used some of the higher 2200+ mah
brands. All seem to work well with the RCX. The only
thing to be aware of is mixing batteries. If you have
5 with a 2200mah rating and one with a 1800 mah
rating, discharge times may be hit and miss. Also,
chargers that are $$CHEAP$$ are not a great buy as
they probably don't monitor the battery during charge
cycles in all the ways that they should. Invest in a
good charger and try to avoid the 15 minute fast
charger deals.
The other thing to think about is that NiMH nominally
have a 1.2 volt charge while alkaline typically have a
1.5 volt charge. Some electronics need the 1.5 volts,
but most are okay with the 1.2. For instance, I have
an older digicam that takes 2 x AA batteries and will
not work with 2.4 volts but works fine with the 3.0
volts provided by 2 x alkaline batteries. The RCX is
good with the NiMH batteries, and I typically see 1.25
to 1.32 volts on the energizer batteries.... for 7 to
7.8 volts rather than the 8.7 to 9 volts that alkaline
batteries will give.
The NiMH batteries are lighter as well, at least a
little bit lighter. I'm having no trouble using them
with the RCX.
Cheers

| We are starting a mindstorm club at the missionary school here in Bogotá and have 4 sets, but we want to try to keep costs down so for the long term we were considering rechargeable batteries, but they have a significant voltage disadvantage. How (...) (19 years ago, 20-Dec-05, to lugnet.robotics)
