    Tripping a relay. —Dan Novy
I'm constructing something similar those "solar lanterns" you see in people's gardens, except on a larger scale. It charges up during the day, and automatically turns on at night. I'll be using a photvoltaic panel to charge a 12v 12Ah battery. The (...) (19 years ago, 20-Aug-05, to lugnet.robotics)

Quoting Dan Novy <dan@flashfilmworks.com>: (...) There are simpler and less power comsumptive ways to do this (a CdS photocell and a simple transistor circuit or comparator - you will probably see something in IC "cookbooks" or with Google), but the (...)      Any body know of a typical consumer device that I could hack apart to find 6 to 9V "latching relay" from? (19 years ago, 22-Aug-05, to lugnet.robotics)

If you hit a 5v latching relay with 9v, will it damage it? (19 years ago, 22-Aug-05, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Tripping a relay. —Bruce Boyes
Quoting Dan Novy <dan@flashfilmworks.com>: (...) If you mean the coil, 9V is 180% of 5V rated coil voltage. The issue is the total power dissipated in the coil. If you only pulse the relay at a very low duty cycle at room temp, it won't ever build (...) (19 years ago, 23-Aug-05, to lugnet.robotics)

So, all our discussion was for naught. Upon arriving, the Black Rock Playa of northern Nevada ate my driver/inverter for my ELWire, so I never got to even try my RCX based photo sensitive switch. Oh, well, now I have the time to do it right.... (19 years ago, 6-Sep-05, to lugnet.robotics)
