what I want to do is have the claw go up and down but stay parallel to the

of elevator construction, that can hold quite a bit of weight for the arm

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.  I am thinking of some sort of
worm gear + one of those toothed strips, but I can't really see how to make
it work efficiently with a good range of motion.

There are probably several ways to solve this.
One is using parallelogram as arms that lifts, and mounting the gripper in one
end of the parallelogram and the robot in the other. I have no photos or drawing
what I think of. But if you make an paralellogram of beams and make it so you
can skew it in one direction, then you understand what I mean.
