I'm not too suprised that FLL decided not to continue with the highschool pilot
program. FIRST has no interest because it competes with their "real" robotics
competition, and I don't think LEGO sees highschool age kids as a key
demographic. So we are going to run our own program.
Things are in a major state of flux right now, but my best guess is that the
highschool program will not change a huge amount from it's current form. There
will be a competition component, a technical component, and a presentation
component. We may try to combine the technical and presentation components into
a technical presentation that must include details about your robots design,
programming, and mission parameters. We may also have multiple events during
the season, instead of just one big tournament.
We will try to give the kids more time with the judges. Judges feedback will
contain constructive criticism designed to help the teams improve. This will be
particularly usefull if the season consists of more than just one event. And we
are thinking of throwing in some sort of random element that will require the
teams to problem solve on the fly. This will allow us to better study team
dynamics. What sort of random element is yet undecided.
I shall keep you posted.
