All the knock-offs don't seem to fit and work as well as the real thing.

It's not just the precision of the fit either.  The plastic used in the knockoffs
(even the relatively up-market ones like MegaBloks) is too hard and brittle.

The bricks stick together OK the first one or two times you use them - but
after that, they wear out to the point that even the simplest models just
fall apart under their own weight.

There is some evidence that mixing inferior bricks with the real thing will
also damage the genuine Lego parts - so if you've inherited a pile of mixed
Lego and 'other' bricks, it's worth going through and sorting out the real
stuff from the fake.

You can tell a genuine Lego brick because it feels kinda 'oily' compared
to the dry feel of knockoffs.

(...) This is even true for the Duplos. Lego holds remarkable tolerances, and in fact has one of the most advanced high-volume, precise, plastic molding facilities in the world. Some of the equipment is custom-designed. So it's no surprise that the (...) (20 years ago, 21-Nov-04, to lugnet.robotics)
