Yes it is expensive, but we weren't paying 8-P

However, if you consider that we needed to run up to 8 Mindstorms robots in a 5m
square sandpit, each with wireless video and control from separate computers, IR
is right out. And RF modems, etc while being cheap would have required expensive
collision avoidance or IDing of messages, or a secondary processor to deal with
inappropriate messages (which, however, could lead to a mesh based network,
where received items could be forwarded on... but that is another project ;-) ).

Your post was a long time ago, and I missed it at the time, but we are close to
getting a purely internal Bluetooth RCX; just finishing the last wiring and
testing now. Basically, everything is internal, with the space coming from
rewiring the battery box to take 1/2 size 3V lithium batteries (like they use in
cameras) to dramatically reduce the weight and space required to run both the
RCX and the BT module. We have finised the wireless camera, subject to me
cutting up a few more tiles to make a nice "lego" compatible box. Will post all
this on a web site in the next few days...
