Hello All,

I'm new to the world of Mindstorms and to this list, and I have a
question.

Upgrading the Roverbot, which backs up when the bumpers feel something,
is there a way of avoiding walls and objects on the floor.  What is the
best way to do this?  How good is IR? Are there any other sensors out
there (made by Lego or others) that would allow the robot to detect an
obstacle before it actually hits it?

Thanks for your help!

Roger
Dear Roger,

In addition to the stuff they sell at www.hitechnic.com there are the following
vendors of alternative sensors:

www.techno-stuff.com

www.mindsensors.com

(Of course there are also the sensors from DCP which they sell at
www.plestore.com (was: www.pitsco-legodacta.com).)

The combination of IR and light sensor is limited, but certainly a good starting
point. I have also tried the IR with two light sensors solution to distinguish
left or right objects respectively - also limited success.

Regards,

Dirk
