Hello everyone,

I've been fortunate enough to get to play with the Linksys WVC11B
Wireless and a VEO Observer Internet Video Cameras.  In the event anyone
is considering the purchase of a networked camera, perhaps these notes
will be of interest to you.  I'll spare everyone the technical details
(as they are available on the internet from the respective
manufacturers).

Linksys website:  http://www.linksys.com
VEO website:  http://www.veoproducts.com

The cameras from either manufacturer have a 10/100 network jack, even if
it is a wireless version.  Linksys only offers a "wireless" model, but
VEO gives the consumer a choice by offerening both wireless and
non-wireless models.  The WVC11B and VEO Observer (wired version) are
comparable in price (under $200 US).  The VEO Observer wireless camera
is about $100 US more than the wired version.

As always, the goals and budget will dictate which is best for you.
Below are the most noteable features between the products that, in my
opinion are deciding factors for purchase.

*  Both vendors provide custom web pages run from the cameras.

*  The Linksys cameras can support 4 simultaneous users.  VEO only
allows one user to connect.

*  Cameras come with desktop utilities to access the cameras from a
non-web interface.

*  The VEO cameras have remote pan, tilt, and microphone.  The Linksys
does not have any of these features.

*  Linksys has terrible focusing.  The VEO has much better optics and
doesn't need focusing.

*  The VEO also has a simple sensor port for security system response.

*  VEO offers an SDK for the cameras.  Linksys does not.

*  Linksys motion detection configuration is easy and has 4 levels and
is detected within software on the camera itself.  The VEO requires an
external device.

*  Image quality on the Linksys is comparable to a USB web camera.  The
VEO's image quality is outstanding, but the frame rate isn't great for
jitter-free motion (even on a 100bT wired network) without trimming the
video size down.

*  Neither currently has a way to access the video streams in Video For
Windows apps or to use the camera for Netmeeting.

In case you are wondering...  The Linksys cam was purchased first
(didn't know about the VEO cam).  I was not happy with it at all.
Started looking up XJPG (the image format the Linksys uses) and came
across a site that mentioned the VEO.  I returned the Linksys and picked
up the VEO (along with a $30 store credit for price difference) and was
immediately impressed!  If I need a high frame rate and wireless camera
that does not need to be adjusted, then I'll pick the Linksys (to save
money).  Otherwise, the VEO wins hands down for my needs.
