I had a similar problem with my desktop system ("too much light...") but
found my laptop worked fine, and a clean Win98 image on my desktop worked
fine too. I narrowed the problem down to a replaced serial.vxd which allows
faster than 115000bps for modems, etc., I had not been running the program
that changes my National Semiconductor chips to allow higher speed modes.
Putting the program back in solved my problem. So maybe using a non
standard serial.vxd can be a problem.
FYI, The web page for the high speed serial was
http://www1.yk.rim.or.jp/~gigo/bbs/shscatbbs.cgi
but it appears to be down so I've copied to my webspace temporarily at
