Everyone,
It's definitely true... LEGO had the installer for Vision Command rebuilt.
Also, for those of you with the Studio set, there is supposedly new release
of that for XP (mine is on back order, so I can't confirm). Why none of
this is posted on their website is beyond me...
This new VC software says it is only for Windows XP... of course, being
myself, I had to try what isn't supposed to work: Installing the "XP Only"
software on Windows 2000...
It loaded without a problem (well, aside of the fact that the installer menu
doesn't display right on anything above 1024x768).
The new installer splashes a message warning not to install on anything
other than Windows XP. It also says the LEGO cam drivers aren't included
and says to download the Logitech QuickCam drivers (although, the software
ended up installing the Logitech Drivers from the CD all on it's own in
2000).
In the coming weeks, I'll update my site and remove the XP/2K Pre-Install
files. I will re-edit and put back the Windows 2000 installation
instructions (using "apcompate.exe" to launch the installer), as the
original version of VC will work on 2000 if you have RIS 2.0 or RIS 2.0
Upgrade (the "VisionCommandUpdater.exe" is required off the RIS2 disc).
So, if you are thinking of purchasing Vision Command but have held off due
to Windows 2000/XP support, I urge you to buy VC and call LEGO (don't press
any options... just wait for a human) and request the XP version of the
software. (I only know the English version is available).
If you request the XP version of VC, you do not need RIS 2.0 because the
installer for the XP version already includes the VC update patch.
Now, if only we could see some consumer Mac support out of LEGO...
