The differences between varous RCXen:
There was an RCX labelled "1.0" that came with the RIS 1.0 set. It had a
power jack on it. This power jack would take 9-12V, AC or DC. It was
"designed" to work with the Lego train transformer.
Then RIS 1.5 came out. It had a few different Lego pieces, and the RCX
was labelled 1.0. However, this RCX DID NOT have the power jack. It was
identical in every other way to the RCX in RIS 1.0.
Then RIS 2.0 came out. It had updated software (including better
firmware) and a USB IR tower. It had the same Lego pieces as the RIS 1.5
(as far as I know). It had an RCX labelled 2.0, which did not have a
power jack.
So, in conclusion, the ONLY difference between any RCX and any other RCX
is the lack (or not) of a power jack.
So yes, you can put the 2.0 firmware on the 1.0 brick.
