I'm sure many of you know this already, but for those that don't...

LEGO NBA Sports -

-- Set #3429 comes with a wind-up motor and several technic parts (axels,
gears, cams, bricks).  One of those "gears" is the new one that can be used
with a light sensor to create a rotation sensor.  Set #3430 also comes with
a wind up motor, but doesn't appear to have any pieces worthwhile.  #3429 at
Wal-Mart was around $14.  (It has actually been a fun set to play with,
too!)

Free electronics from Maxim IC (http://www.maxim-ic.com) -

Maxim will send free samples of many of their components.  They send two of
each component requested, but they limit the number of components you can
request.  They also send out a really nice "Maxim Engineering Journal" every
month with complete schematics for whatever device(s) they are showcasing in
that "issue".

Zip Zap RC cars (http://www.zipzaps.com) -

-- has small high RPM 3v motors.  Blue motors are 10,000 RPM; Green are
16,000; Red are 21,500; and Yellow are 23,500.  Standard cars come with the
blue motor, yellow motor only comes in the "Fast and Furious" sets.  The
gear of the motor seems to fit into the LEGO axel crosshair pattern.  I
think the motor (along with necessary electronics for 3v) could be squeezed
in a 2x4 brick.  An "upgrade kit" can be purchased for about $8 at Radio
Shack that includes a green and red motor.

Spy Gear Spy Tracker System
(http://www.spygear.net/spyflash.php?toyid=10001) -

-- has three motion detectors that send an alert to a base station.  The
base station has a siren that goes off and a voice that says there's an
intruder, but it also has indicator LED's to show which of the three sensors
was tripped.  The whole set is rather small, and most of the base appears to
be decorative.  Perhaps the electronics from the base (minus the voice/alarm
part) could be placed within a small enclosure and tap into the LED outputs
and fed to an RCX sensor.  Might be a cheap way to have crude proximity
detection.  We picked one up for my better half's son for about $20 at TRU.
The sensors were amazingly sensitive!

MCM Electronics (http://www.mcmelectronics.com) -

-- frequently has good/great deals on things.

(...) These (and the other two or three manufacturers) are actually using pager/cellphone vibration motors. The batteries last for only a couple of minutes between recharges and the radio range is only about 3 to 6 feet! You can get the motors (...) (21 years ago, 11-Feb-03, to lugnet.robotics)
