I think you may be right about the software differences-- like I said, I've
only used 2.0. Still, if you can get a good deal on an older version, grab
it. Remember, you can upgrade to the 2.0 software for only $20 (search
shop.lego.com for "2.0 upgrade".)

It is my understanding that 2.0 is a major change.  2.0 can use USB or
serial; however, that isn't the really important part.  2.0 introduced
the use of variables, timers, If Then Elses (Yes/No), loops,
Randomness, Big Blocks, My Big Blocks (customized subroutines) and a
lot of other stuff.

2.0 became a lot more competitive with RoboLab 2.5.  With RIS 1.5,
RoboLab is clearly the leader; with RIS 2.0, RoboLab seems only to lead
in datalogging and perhaps in easier control of program branches.

My money's on 2.0, and I have 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0.   But I'm no expert.
Actually I'm about to dump all my serial towers and older software
versions, and some extra copies of 2.0 (although may keep those to hand
out to students).

Just my 2 cents.

Generall, I think they are all good. 2.0 software is somewhat

improved (I

haven't used the older versions, so I can't say precisely how much),

and each

kit includes slightly different pieces, but I think the differences

are

fairly minor. The one important exception is that 2.0 uses USB, while

1.0 &

1.5 use a serial connection (and therefore requires an extra battery

for the

IR tower). If this is an issue, buy appropriately.

Basically, if you can get an excellent deal on 1.0 or 1.5, grab it.

Otherwise,

2.0 is the way to go.

Hi,

I am new to RIS, but want to catch along as soon as possible,

can you

suggest which RIS version (1.0, 1.5, or 2.0) is good to start with.

I tried

to find RIS 1.0 at some place but couldnt get it.

If anybody can help me out, I will appreciate it.

Thanks
Veera
