<snip snip snip>

If I remember right, the vertical drive shaft (from the motor in the
body) was also the center of the circle for steering.  Something like
this:

             S                S            T   S   T
         T   S   T                T   S   T
         TTTTSTTTT
         T  GGG  T   WWWW               T G     T   WWWW
         TAGAAAAATAAAWWWW
           G         WWWW
                     WWWW

S = Shaft (drive shaft from motor)
T = Technic Turntable
G = Gear
A = Axel
W = Wheel

if i remember correctly there was something where the guy did something like
put a differential through the turntable with the 24t part of the diff
inside the 24t inside gearing and then made a sort of limited slip axel (did
i say that right?)  i seem to remember the problem being that if it was a
fixed axel the vehicle would turn and do 180 degrees so with the limited
axel it would turn at almost a 90 degree angle. if you place the diff inside
the turntable and drive the vertical axel you'll understand: drive goes
through the diff until it is stopped and then is transferred to the rotation
of the turntable.

(...) Yes - that seems to work too - but it still needs one wheel in the middle to make it practical and that added to the length of the differential makes for a VERY tall vehicle. Even my original design suffers from that problem. I'm having to (...) (22 years ago, 26-Oct-02, to lugnet.robotics)

That would be here: (URL) tried building it, and it didn't work very well. Maybe I did something wrong. (...) (22 years ago, 26-Oct-02, to lugnet.robotics)
