I have also had no problems whatsoever running BricxCC under XP without
resorting to any compatability settings. Just run the install program and
you should be good to go.

A long time ago RcxCC and early versions of BricxCC required the Spirit OCX
control which was only installed via the RIS software. But for a very long
time now BricxCC has not required the OCX control. The firmware (as Dean
mentioned) is required. Also, if you want to use the USB tower you need to
install the tower drivers which are part of the RIS software. But you can
also get the latest firmware and the USB tower drivers by installing the
Lego Mindstorms SDK 2.0. It should install just fine on XP as well without
using compatibility settings.
