IMO, the general lack of VC excitement boils down to:
1) The USB cable on the camera. The cable is heavy and not as flexible as one
would like. It's difficult to overcome the limited range of motion caused by
it. And, obviously, it tethers an otherwise mobile robot.
2) VC software only works with Logitech cameras.
3) Focus has to be done manually (unless you modify the camera).
For what it is, VC is awesome! You have a basic video recognition system. It's
able to detect colors and movement in predetermined regions. One can manually
create their own region templates. However, all that novelty quickly wears off.
(At least, it doesn't do me any good to do vision processing within 10 feet of
my desk.)
I'm not sure if VC software integrates easily with NQC or any other aftermarket
platform, as I've never done it myself.
At $23.99, I'm might order another VC set! I'd suggest buying it just for LEGO
compatibility alone--cam is already designed to connect with LEGO pieces. The
set also comes with transparent gear blocks, red gears, and a large LEGO
turntable--half of which is transparent.
Apparently the camera's are the same, although the cases are different (VC's cam
is see-through).

E-Toys also has the Vision Command for US $23.99.

It's been a while since I dug into this product, although my recollection is
that it wasn't given huge thumbs-up by the AFOL community.
Thoughts? Opinions? Rants?
Also, is this the same camera (but with different software) that ships with
Lego Studio?
Thanks!

| (...) Hi Rob, The parts selection of the VC is pretty good, but it DOES NOT include a Technic turntable - are you maybe thinking of the ultimate builder's kit? (URL) (22 years ago, 28-Aug-02, to lugnet.robotics)
