I have thought of a simple level sensor that would use light sensors

I'm not sure if this is workable, since I haven't done too much RCX
programming, but what about something like the following, which only
requires one light sensor:

Suspend a disc on a horizontal axis after drilling small, regularly
spaced holes near its edge. (A template for this sort of disc can be
found in Gordon McComb's "The Robot Builder's Bonanza"; you might also
try cutting out the bottom of a colander.) Sandwich it between the light
sensor and a light source. At one point along its edge, in a place where
it won't impede the rotation of the disc through the sensor "sandwich",
attach a small weight. Then, program your RCX to count the number of
times the light sensor cycles. The current count tells you the angle of
inclination or declination.

Oops.

I don't know how to determine which direction the wheel is traveling,
which is necessary so that you know whether to increment or decrement
your counter when the light sensor cycles.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Ben

(...) You need at least three "shades" rather than just black and white - cf the rotation encoder. Actually the device you describe is basically a rotation encoder with an arm and a weight! stephen -- Did you check the web site first?: (URL) (26 years ago, 30-Dec-98, to lugnet.robotics)
