I use Hitachi's H8 tool chain and not GCC.

Hm? You don't use the gcc toolchain for the H8 but another compiler? Can
you tell a bit more about your compiler?

I revised my testings without optimizing out the calculation and the empty
loop took 0.82 sec. for 10.000 iterations. Reading the light sensor
increases the needed time by 35%. The Firmware program increased only by
9%, but runs 300 times slover. Mileage will vary, but I think an advantage
of factor 100 or up between a compiled program and a Firmware program can
safely be assumed.
