He can of course use the regular old lego parts from the kit to build
things (robotic or otherwise).

As far as the Mindstorm specific stuff he will probably find that less
useful with the Scout.

DISCLAIMER:  I don't remember the exact part list for those kits, so if
I mention something about a part that isn't included then please ignore
it.

Motors
He can use the extra motors, but since he already has 2 motors
for the 2 outputs it is not as useful as if he had a RCX.  He can always
hook up 2 motors to the same output, but there is the question of how
useful that really is in general.

Lights
He can use the lights fine.  Same point as the motors in that he
doesn't really have a spare output, but since the lights need to be
attached to a motor to work well this isn't really a bad thing.

Sensors
The Scout can only use touch sensors.  So he will not be able to
use any other type of sensors those from those kits.  He could use extra
touch sensors, but basicly it is the same as the motors.  He has 2
inputs and already has 2 touch sensors.  He can attach 2 (or more) touch
sensors to the same input.  For some constructions it might be useful,
for others not.

My personal opinion is give him the sets.  He can use 99% of the pieces
now.  When/If he gets a RIS then he can use the rest.

Subject: Expansion sets questions

Feeling quite ignorant here...last year I bought my son 9735 Robotics
Discovery
Set for Christmas.

This year, since I just can't let cheap Lego sit on a shelf ;-) I picked
up
9730 RoboSports,9732 Extreme Creatures and 9736 Exploration Mars.

Those boxes all say they require Robotics Invention System. Sooo...
9730,9732
and 9736 pretty much won't do my son any good since we have 9735
Discovery and
not an Invention Kit??

Will my 11 year old have fun with these sets anyway? Or will he think
I'm a
moron for giving him expansion sets that he doesn't have the main set
for?

Should I hold off on giving these to him until we get the RIS?

Thanks!
Julie
