There may also be a practical reason for objecting too.

Lego is *designed* for people to pull apart, put together different ways - to
stall motors, short-circuit outputs and otherwise abuse.

However, the Aibo could conceivably be damaged by bad programming - if they
suddenly had a ton of machines returned under warranty that had been damaged
by 3rd party software, then they would be justifiably upset.

In a closed system like Aibo, they may well have that problem.

It's no use them saying "if you run someone else's code on your Aibo, the
warranty is voided" - because we all know that people would restore the original
code before sending it back.

IMHO, they should have just designed the system to be "open" in the first
place - they could have provided legal entrypoints that gave safe access
to Aibo's inner functions - making it 'legally' and 'safely' hackable.

That would have done wonders for their sales.

Aibo is like the RDS/Scout...it should have been like the RIS/RCX.

One key difference is that most (all?) Mindstorm third-party software does not include _any_ intellectual property of TLG, but is a complete rewrite of something. The Aibo mods mentioned are patched versions of Sony-owned Aibo code. This is (...) (23 years ago, 2-Nov-01, to lugnet.robotics)
