Why not set a variable with 1 or 0, e.g. 1=Forward, 0=Backwards. This way when the robot hits something you would know what direction it's traveling in.
I haven't tried this, it's just an idea.

Nice idea, just one problem though...
It gives you no idea as to the direction of the collision so the robot
would need some other means of locating the cause of the collision and
taking remedial action.
Still, if you can solve that problem...
