By the way Rich, there are LOTS of ideas on this site for "experiments"
I was thinking of solving the pendulum problem with a motor and a gear
driving a rack to keep the pendulum vertical. Would this be allowed?

| There are 2 versions of this problem with many advanced variations that you can observe in this site. What you have mentioned is the linear version which is allowed and ok.
