I just called S@H and they said that the light sensor <set:9758> has been
discontinued.  This really surprises me, as I think this is the most useful
sensor they have.

Now I've ordered one from Dacta who still had them in stock (how long, I
wonder?), but besides the full Mindstorms kit, does this sensor come in any
other set?

(...) Go to Pitsco-DACTA at (URL) under [Spare Parts, Tools & Resources]>[LEGO Dacta Spare Parts]>[Sensors] The 9 Volt Light Sensor Identifier is W779758, Cost is $22 + $6 shipping (place a $100 it hurts less ;-) -Rob Doucette. (23 years ago, 12-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.market.shopping)
