Hey all!
I'd just like to introduce myself to the list and respond to this thread
about the contests.
My name is Ross Carlson, I'm a 29 year old programmer and part owner of an
internet company (www.collectoronline.com) and I just recently got into
lego robotics. Being the internet programming junkie that I am, my first
project was a telerobotic web cam. The camera was a standard color
Quickcam. The "chassis" was made from the parts of the technic motorcycle
(#8417) and the motors were controlled with a simple relay circuit
connected to the parallel port on a linux based computer.
I plan to start redoing the camera with a more robust chassis, using parts
from the super street car (the original chassis was too flimsy, not enough
parts) and some mindstorms sensors to provide feedback to the control
circuit and software. I plan to use a standard RS232 serial interface to
control the motors and receive positional feedback from the sensors.
Does anyone have any experience building bi-directional serial control
circuits for this kind of thing? I have very little experience with this
sort of thing, other than the programming side. If anyone has any pointers
towards books, web sites, or particularly useful integrated circuits ... I
would love to hear from you! Also, if anyone knows of a "better" way to
control motors and recieve feedback from sensors with a computer other than
using a serial port, I'd love to hear other ideas.
Rich, as for the contest web site, you mentioned adding a voting system. I
just wanted to offer my time to help out with the site if need be. I agree
that contests are a great way to stimulate creativity and foster the
enthusiast community. Interactive web programming is what I do 8 hours a
day, so I'm sure I could be of some help in doing a voting system. I've
also got access to high speed servers, etc. Let me know if you'd like any help.
