Well i havent tried anything myself but i think the most effective way would
be to use a tire in contact with the lens. You've probably tried that
already, but it was the first thing that came to mind. hope it helps.

If you are willing to give up a half of a large turntable, you could glue the large geared half to the rubber on the camera and drive the gear with a motor on top of the camera. A 26t gear will mesh with a gear head motor on top, but it is a bit (...) (24 years ago, 5-Nov-00, to lugnet.robotics)
