I noticed that settting the motor speed does not seem to have much efect
on the speed the robot is moving:

0 = slow
1 = faster
2 = slighly faster than 1
3-7 = about equal to 2

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this standard behavior?

I think it depends a lot on the weight of the robot and the type of mobility
used.
For instants, when I use tracks on my CyberMaster, 1 is very very slow and 7
is fast. All the other numbers between have speeds more or less according to
this graph (fixed width font):

Apparent |                       *
Speed    |                *
        |           *
        |       *
        |    *
        |  *
        | *
        +------------------------
               Motor
               Speed

But then, CyberMaster's internal motors may not behave like external ones...
