I would also suggest you take a look at Gordons Brick Programmer. It is
a convenient intermediate between the Lego RCX Code and NQC. Typical
prototyping time is 10 - 15 minutes. It's a great way to check stuff out.
I would also strongly suggest the IR remote. I use mine all the time for
activating motors etc during mechanical assembly.
