Hi,

I should probably have clarified. I'm not intending
on using Java to implement a CORBA ORB, I think that
would be way too costly, I was thinking at a more
granular level of coding. Probably NQC and/or assembly.

I know JINI interfaces exist, but to the best of my
knowledge, they simply use Jini as the protocol between
a requesting client and a Server, which in turn
communicates with the Mindstorms environment. The SUN
reference implementation, as it was explained to me,
used JINI to enable a PDA to find the Server serice
and then communicate instructions to it, which were
in turn relayed to the robots via a non-JINI interface.

I don't think JINI has been used between the
aforementioned Server and a robot yet.(Somebody please
correct me if I'm wrong - I'd love to hear it had been
done.)

Again, I appreciate and thoughts or information at all,

Thanks

Colin

Hi

I read a mail a few weeks back about a minimum JVM
implementation for the RCX. I am doing some reearch
into CORBA for Embedded Systems and was wondering if
anyone has any thoughts / exposure as to the RCX's
suitability ....

Colin

I'm sure it's doable but it would take quite a bit
of work. You would probably require a special
IDL compiler to create stubs and skels that
use the IR communication routines. Another way
to do it is to implement a socket layer. My brother
was talking about implementing sockets
for TinyVM (http://www.crazyrobots.com/tinyvmsite),
but I believe he lost interest.

To be honest, Java is not necessarily the best choice
for the implementation of CORBA. You might be able
to do it on top of legOS (though it may not be as fun).
Now, if we were talking about RMI and/or Jini, that's
a different story. Many Java enthusiasts would probably
tell you to forget about CORBA and implement Jini.
(I'm not too familiar with Jini technology yet).

In any case, any of these frameworks that would allow
you to install long-running servers in the RCX will require
some features to be added to TinyVM: garbage collection, strings, etc.

If anyone is interested in starting such projects, let
me know.

Regards,
--Jose

Hi

I'm working at a method to transmit to a RCX that is not directly
aligned with the IR-tower (say that the little robot with the RCX
mounted on it can be anywhere in the range of 2-3 meters from the
IR-transmitter).
I want to use only IR communication, no radio or cable or anything else.

Has anyone already found a good solution to it?
Is it possible to use something to reflect IR-light?

Thanx in advance
Daniele

On LOW power I've found the RCX hardly reads any signals at all. You must • be
very close to the tower/other RCX to read it. (V Cool) On HIGH though I can
bounce the signal down the hall and it still reaches my bot.

I'm only using the RCX codes though 1-255
