I want to create a light-weight tethered helicopter and was wondering if
it was possible at all.  Is the micro-motor powerful enough to lift a
small helicopter.  What about the geared motor or the older motor that
is found in the space shuttle.  I just want it to hover over without
moving forward or back.  Later on I want to expand on this idea and let
the RCX contol it automatically.

If you ever make it work, please, post here the how-to !!! :)

...LEGO's *heavy* so, maybe a custom-made loooong, *light*, *strong*,
large(?) heli-blades ? hmmm... carbon-fiber alike material ?!

...I doubt that 1 (2?, 3?) LEGO motor(s) is/are enough

(...) I think your best bet might be to supplement the lift by possibly making a dirigible. I agree with the statement that Lego's are heavy and motors are weak, so this would seem to be the best suggestion. You could still have it RCX controlled, (...)
