Subject: Linux Expo 2000 at UT campus - an invitation, update, & schedule
First: There are several recipients who are receiving this for the first
time. This is about a Linux Expo in Austin, Texas on Feb. 17, 2000.
This is the scheduled release date for Windows 2000. We are looking
for folks who use Linux for fun, profit, and just plain work. We
will be doing installs but hope to have much more to look at with
respect to the Linux community and its contributions to the Austin
area. The event is open, at no charge, to individuals as well as
profit and non-profit groups.
Howdy Don & et al.,
After thinking this over I've got a plan!!!!
However, I'll need explicit directions to pass around. Last time I was out
there was about 6 months ago, they were still working on that big hexapod
that has since been cancelled (as I understand it). I can find it but I
don't think I've a hope in hell of giving anyone else legitimate
directions.

Ok, here's the plan then. Everyone getting this please pass it around to
possibly interested parties...
Linux Expo 2000 Info Page:

Check back often as the page will change rapidly as this gains momentum
over the next two weeks.
This Thu. the ALG meeting starts at 7pm. I propose that anyone who is
interested in participating with the Linux Expo should first meet at the
ALG meeting if at all possible. At approximately 8pm I'll be leaving to
go to the Robot Group meeting. When Don says they stay late, if the group
is like it was, they mean late(!).
I'll try to be there by 9pm. I would like to take about 5 to 10 minutes to
describe where we're at and what we need. At that point I'd like to ask
the Robot Group to discuss this amongst themselves and decide at what
level if any they wish to participate.
Don: Please do what you can to get some discussion going in the group
before next Thu. My little Lego 'bot says he ain't goin' unless
he's got another RIS to talk to...
Omar (from UT - ACM) came to the Austin Cypherpunks meeting this evening
and I believe were in with those guys. He is going to see what he can do
about getting a conference room at Pickle on Burnet on Feb. 17. We should
know by Wed. or Thu.
Omar is going to see what he can do to find some other groups on campus
that might be using Linux. For example the 'ROOT' data collection and
analysis software is heavily used in particle physics research and many
use it on Linux.
If this location falls through I would like to see the event take place at
two locations. The N. Lamar ALG meeting location and the Robot Group
location if they buy into the event.
Everyone should do whatever they can to determine the participation of any
groups by Thu.'s ALG meeting. Assuming we determine it's a "Go for power
up" then the next step will be advertising and organizing.
We'll need to hit the newspapers in Austin and UT as well as drop flyers
off all over town (and not just in the computer stores either). We need to
hit music stores, grocery store bulletin boards, book stores (see if the
store will let you put them next to the checkout counter, the door is a
good second location. Don't put them in the computer section.), etc.
As to organizing, this means each group needs to collect any all equipment
they will bring. Identify any short-falls and alert me and I'll go snark
hunting for resources. This needs to be completed by Sat. Feb. 5. Each
group or participant should verify their demo by then. There will be
a final individual check-out to verify resource fulfillment on Sat. Feb.
12.
If we do get the Balconese site then we'll have almost the entire day most
likely. Please plan accordingly. Now is the time to ask your boss for time
off. And if they'll let you do it on the clock we'll list them as a
sponsor on the webpage and flyers.
Rob Romans: Please review VMWare policies and see what we need to do to
get demo licenses for VMWare. We'll need to burn 25 CD's and
also 50 of the Austin Cypherpunks crypto CD.
Phantom: Please let me know if you'll be in town to do the non-linear
video editing demo.
APM: Anyone who's interested in participating please do what you can to
get in touch with me prior to Thu. so we can update the events
schedule. This would be a premo time to do test-talks on the
various scheduled topics for future APM meetings.
ALG: Anyone want to volunteer to develop the flyer we put in the stores as
as the press release we send to the press? Also, someobody would get
major brownie points if they would take up the call to post this to
USENET. And not just the Austin and Linux groups but places like
sci.math, sci.physics, sci.electronics, robotics newsgroups, etc.
And don't forget /..
PACKET RADIO: Any chance at all we can get a definitive answer on
participation by this Thu.?
GAMES: We need some folks to demo some games, and not just Quake 3 either!
I've included a couple of the wargaming lists I'm on that might
have some interest in participating.
ASL: Anybody in the Austin area want to demo VASL under Linux?
Cypherpunks: Anyone interested in doing a demo or talk about PGP and other
crypto issues? (ps. No fed's at tonites meeting, sorry to
crimp your paranoia)
REMEMBER:
The goal of Linux Expo 2000 is not only to introduce new users to Linux
but to answer the perennial question of once you've got it installed just
what is that can be done with it.
