Cutting up electric plates is my favorite as well - you get a pretty
robust "lego" connection for very litle cost. You just have to be
careful while soldering not to deform the plastic.

| (...) Yes, preshaping the wire and pre 'tinning' the ends is best. You also must take care when cutting the plates that you don't splay it out. (Why lego doesn't make 2x2's!)
