Here is my 2 cents worth.

  1. Why even send the number of the preditor or prey. Just send the
code that says I am preditor or prey.
  2. Add some IR LED's to the outside of the bots. External powered.
  3. Use the three in one light sensor array, but use IR detectors.
  4. Align the three IR sensors in a triangle configuration
This will allow sensing another bot (heat) and give direction data.
IR LED's will simulate warm bodies.
  5. Prey see's heat, hear's bot code (roar) says I'm preditor. Prey
tries to get away.
  6. Preditor see's heat, hears code (roar), ignors other preditor.
Hears bot code (squeak), prey. senses direction of heat, goes toward
heat.
  7. If preditor bot touches prey switch input, prey is dead, prey stops
and plays tone.
  8. If prey touches another prey, backsup and goes another direction.
If direction is toward preditor, turn and run.

That's cheating, though -- Lego doesn't make ultrasonic
transmitters/receivers.
