In lugnet.robotics, Ralph Hempel writes:
The trick and folly with robotics is anthropomorphic thinking.  Even though
we can use our hand to pick up a quarter, why would you design something
that complicated for the task?  Quarters are rarely found resting on
edge..... use a rubber suction cup and vacuum....just like the pick and
place robots for PCB manufacturing.  You may be able to get enough vacuum
by connecting the end of the line to the bottom of a large pneumatic
cylinder, and pulling on the rod end.

Ummm,  I'd use a magnet.

Magnets work fine to pick up a Canadian quarter, but not American ones.

(...) Well, thats easy to solve: Ask one of us to go to the bank and get you a roll of quarters that are magnetic :) James Powell, another Canadian (25 years ago, 14-Jan-00, to lugnet.robotics)
