You should scan for some old posts by either John Barnes or Philo concerning the different "IR transceiver" chips used between RCX 1.0 and 2.0 and between serial vs USB towers. (...) Yes, the GPS communicated directly to the NXT via bluetooth. I can't remember who it was that figured out how to do this, after most of us thought it was impossible, but it does work.
