I just got a note from someone who remembered the comparision I did on
RTL between the three airports, and I decided to repost it here in
.reviews where it might be easier to find.
Here's a Dejanews reference if you want to see the thread in context,
etc.
http://x8.dejanews.com/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=416683216&CONTEXT=920437857.281411851&hitnum=16
and here's a copy of the post (including my sig at the time, what the
hey..) At this time I have all three, A, IJ and CS. I still feel the
same way but I do cherish my A. Note also that this post is out of
context, Matt and I had been sparring (in fun, I thought) about this so
I was needling him a bit.

So everyone's working from the same pages, I've included refs to the
three sets I am about to discuss:
Airport (1985):
http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=6392-1
International Jetport (1990):
http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=6396
Century Skyway (1994):
http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=6597
Now, open three browser windows, and follow along. I abbreviate these as
A, IJ, CS for brevity...
Now, how to rank these? They have different piece counts and prices.
I'd say, rank them on:
- Quality of airliner
- Quality of helicopter
- Quality of support equipment
- Quality of tower
- Quality of terminal building(s)
- Quality of runways
Airliner:
I think we all would agree that the airliner in each is roughly
equivalent, although I'd rank them in this order (always best one first
in what follows): CS (airliner flips open, and is cooler), IJ (almost
identical, I forget if it flips or not), A (almost as good... the four
engines are nice.)
Copter:
A has the best copter, in terms of realism, but CS is bigger. IJ is a
dinky ho-hum copter like 1000 other TLG copters. Yawn. Rank: A (wide
margin), CS (wide margin), IJ (dead last by a lot! That copter is SO
boring).
Support equipment:
CS (baggage tow and cart, gasser, stairs) IJ (baggage tow and cart), A
(baggage tow and cart, substantially less realistic than IJ or CS) CS
wins this one by a HUGE margin, no other set (1) has stairs, a must have
if you don't have high level gates or steps built into the plane. Gasser
is nice but not key... you could buy gas'n'go flyer for completeness to
get a gas truck if, like some, you were building a full up airport.
Tower:
CS (separate tower, kinda reminds me of LAX tower in a way), A (mounted
on terminal in a convincing way), IJ (mounted on terminal in an
unconvincing way, last by a wide margin... again.)
Terminal Building(s):
CS (two buildings, including a garage, and a nice terminal, although the
palm tree is misplaced.. best by a wide margin), IJ (the gates on the
single building are well done, slightly better than...) A, (nice
building but ho hum...)
Runways: A tossup. CS has a few more plates but all are about the same
in my book.
So, Mr. Hanson.... :-) in my book, IJ does not come in first in ANY
category, and comes in third in several, and in at least two is
stunningly last. CS comes in first in several, by a wide margin once. A
only wins one (the copter). My overall ranking is:
CS, A, IJ.
and so should be yours. :-) Note that I have CS and IJ but not A. (not
yet, anyway...) Hope that helps. Thanks for playing.

I had to do it... Consider it done. Note that I don't like CS "about 20
times" better than A, but I'd say I like CS about 4-5 times better than
IJ, and IJ makes my top 20 list of non train sets.
1 - EVER, that I know of. Is there another set anywhere that has
airplane stairs?? Anyone?

| That link seems to be wrong. It seems that pasting in DejaNews URLs doesn't work any more?? Anyway, you can find it yourself by doing a dejanews powersearch on group rec.toys.lego with keywords century skyway and author Larry Pieniazek.. Maybe this (...) | You forget that CS has a second chopper. It's of the boring, ho-hum, clone of a 1000 other TLG copters variety, so I'm not sure if it's an asset to CS, or a detriment. ;) Also, (just looking at the browser pictures--I don't have any of these sets) (...) (26 years ago, 3-Mar-99, to lugnet.reviews)
