IMHO 6080 is the better of the two sets. Here are my reasons.
6080 is built on a larger baseplate. The two plates in the back of the 6085
are 16x16 while those of 6080 are 16x24 I believe. The castles cover the same
area but 6080 has more plate in front of the gatehouse.
My main complaint with 6085 is that it is black, too black. It doesn't work
well with any of the other modular sets, both in color and the design of its
rear wall. Only the Knights Stronghold is somewhat of a match. I just don't
like black as a primary construction color. It results in a dark mass where
you can't see much of the detail unless there is plenty of light. 6086 is much
better because it includes more gray highlights as well as red and yellow. But
I find 6085 too dark. Gray is more realistic.
6085 does have a good assortment of gray bricks but 6080 has far more. I have
no problem with 30 castle walls, especially when 5 have stone printing.
Granted the corner wall pieces in 6085 are nice. But remember they didn't
exist in 1984 when 6080 came out. They do give 6085 a nice gatehouse, but I
think the back towers are too small. 6080 is boxy (as many earlier real
castles were) but it has more room as a result.
My favorite feature of 6080, which 6085 lacks are the rooms and stairs in the
back. There are small rooms built into the wall I use for stables.
I also like the minifig assortment and equipment of 6080. 8 old style
crusaders, 4 knights, black axes, a black, white, and yellow sattle.
Don't get me wrong. I like 6085. It has a certain emotional attachment being
my first large castle set as a kid. Its certainly far better then 6091. If it
were gray then I might like it be better then 6080. But I'm a nut of the sets
from 1984-1987. 6080, 6073, and 6074 remain my three favorite Lego sets ever
made which is why I have 3 of each.
Thats my $.02 Seriously I would recommend both sets.
