What is the purpose of these?  Why not just use normal heads?

Several reasons:

- a normal head doesn't have a rod hole

- the rod hole in the pen pieces is rod diameter the whole thickness of
the brick, which makes for a sturdier pen

- the pen pieces are not exactly LEGO dimensions (which I actually think
is bad, but given that, the heads should match the other pieces - there
is value to the pieces being larger to make a sturdier pen, but it would
have been nice if they were 2x2x4 plates thick so they would integrate
better with regular LEGO elements.

Okay, I guess that makes sense, except why is the LEGO Group making pens, and
why do the pens have mini-heads on them??????????????

Because their an evil marketting machine out to get our money....

(ok, perhaps that was uncalled for...)

Seriously? Because the well know that dedicated fans will buy all sorts
of related merchandise (did you notice how much Harry Potter stuff was
in the stores this past Christmas?). And for those who want to keep
their creations LEGO pure, you can now use the pens to mark up your
bricks! Now you can make a LEGO pure RCX driven plotter! I wonder when
we'll see the first MOC which uses a pen in a non-traditional way (they
might make nifty heavy weapons on a tank or space ship for example [hope
I'm not making it too easy on folks :-)]).

(...) Like the completely blank book with a Harry Potter cover that costs $12.99? That was silly. I don't buy 'related'merchadise', I think the money would be better spent on building toys. A weird pen that costs more than a T-3 Trike or another (...) (24 years ago, 16-Mar-01, to lugnet.reviews)
