I got my first pen a little over a week ago, and I just received two
more today. These pens are neat. The pens come with a bunch of elements
which aren't exactly normal LEGO brick size, but do have a stud on top,
and fit on top of a stud. They also have a rod hole all the way through.
There is a metal rod attached to the pen clip and pen end which runs
through all the parts to make the customized section. The pen end and
the clip each have a stud.

The parts come in several flavors (in general the elements are smaller
than 2x2:

- Square bricks which are about 3.5 plates thick, the bricks are
somewhat less than 2x2
- Oversized minifig heads, about 3.5 plates thick, unfortunately these
won't fit on a minifig, the stud hole is not deep enough.
- fluted round bricks, about 3.5 plates thick
- Round bricks about 2.5 plates thick
- semi-spherical bricks about 3.5 plates thick

You can use any element which has a rod hole in place of some of the pen
elements, however, you need to take care to attain the correct
thickness. A pen uses 6 about 3.5 plate thick elements, for a total of
21 plates thickness. The pens which use the about 2.5 plate thick
elements use 9. The elements don't seem to be an integral number of LEGO
units in any dimension, but if you come close to the right thickness the
pen will hold together, but it does mean that if you use the elements in
regular brick constructions, you will have to take some care if they
will have LEGO bricks stacked on top which need to connect to something
else.

The pens I have and reviews and comments on each follow. Each pen comes
with a nice hard plastic pen case.

1523 Arctic Pen $12.95

Comes with 2 Arctic oversized minifig heads, 2 black fluted elements, 4
semi-spherical elements (Scala orange, trans dark blue, anti-freeze,
white), and 4 square elements w/printing (blue w/4 different polar bear
prints; grey w/hazard striping on 2 sides, compass rose, and iceberg;
orange w/tractor on two sides, #20 flag on two sides; white w/blue paw
prints on 2 sides, snow shoes on two sides). Blue pen, white pen clip.

2027 Alpha Pen Pack $21.95

A bunch of approx. 2.5 plate thick round elements with lettering in
three colors (red, yellow, blue). Blue
(AABBCCDDEEFGGHHIIJJJKKLLMMNNOOPPQRRSSTTUUVWXYZ'-!? and 2 blank). Red
(50, presumed the same distribution as blue), Yellow (68, 50 presumed
the same distribution as blue plus "ALPHABET!" and "LEGO-PENS"). Blue
pen, green pen clip. This provides a nice set of letters which will be
interesting to figure out how to use.

2029 Dream Star Pen Pack $21.95

3 very light blue w/forever on 2 sides, 3 very light blue w/hearts on 2
sides, 3 trans purplish square, 3 trans purplish square w/friends on 2
sides, 3 trans pinkish square w/scala stud symbol on 2 sides, 3 trans
pinkish square w/best on 2 sides, 2 trans pinkish square, 3 trans
purplish metallic like square, 3 trans purplish semi-spherical w/star on
one side, 15 trans pinkish or purplish (there's more than one color
here, but not sure if it's 2 colors or more) semi-sphereical. Pen
lanyard w/purple string and blueish ends. Purple pen. Very light blue
pen clip.

This pen will provide some nifty decorative elements

Each pen came with a catalog sheet which lists all the pens. Other pens:

Pen Series 1 (presumably all of these are $12.95)

1515 Classic (red, yellow, blue letters)

1516 Decoder (yellow, green, purple letters)

1517 Hieroglyph (various hieroglyphs on round elements)

1518 Race (various race symbols)

1519 Sport (soccer and other elements - the soccer balls are the
semi-spherical parts)

1520 Adventure (adventurer symbols)

Pen Series 2 (presumably all $12.95)

1522 Soccer (soccer elements - the soccer balls are the semi-spherical
parts)

1523 Arctic (see above)

1524 Dino Island (dino symbols, this one has a white semi-sphere with
palms printed on it which looks like a nifty decorative element)

1525 World (various symbols, US flag, Kanji writing, and others)

Pen Packs ($21.95 each)

2027 Alpha (see above)

2028 Classic (plain red, yellow, and blue elements, with pen lanyard)

2029 Dream Star (see above)

2030 Safari (various elements, one black semi-sphere seems to have a
fire printed on it, w/keychain builder also)

I will probably get the Dino Island one (actually, probably 2, to get 2
of the palm elements), Safari, and World. I may end up getting them all.

(...) What is the purpose of these? Why not just use normal heads? (24 years ago, 16-Mar-01, to lugnet.reviews)
