Howdy all,
...after a small disappointment with the Throwbots, I picked up a 8246
Hydroracer technic kit. This is a smallish kit ( 46 pcs ) that I bought at
Walmart for about $3.99 ( I have seen them for more other places...but this
makes the pieces about 11 cents a pop ). The primary model is a "hydrofoil" and
the
secondary is a helicopter.
1) I liked the constructive use of parts. As opposed to a warlike kit, it was
neat building a machine. While Lego has produced several other
hydrofoils, the design was very nice. There are three wheelhubs it rolls along
on, one acting as a pulley, which turns a small pulley/spacer...in turn
spinning two bevel gears. This causes the three way rack and pinion bar ( it
looks like a prop ) to turn. ( The copter similarly uses the bevels to turn the
main rotor
).
2) You get a lot of good technic pieces for a relatively small price. The three
way r&p bar, two triangles, several axle connectors, liftbars and the new
"roundy"
beams. Aside from the flexible bumber pieces there was only one decorative
element ( a 1x2 flat tile with controls printed on it ). One of my students
bought
several of these on sale to use the elements in other models.
As an affordable small technic kit, I would recommend this one.
