The box does not have a set name on it anywhere although it is on the
Zany-Brainy price tag sticker.  It appears to me to be European packaging • as
the traditional US warning labels appear on a sticker on the box.  The
players have pre-printed torsos unlike the World Cup players which have
stickers.  The non-goalie player (Forward? - Striker? - exhibiting my • soccer
ignorance) is NOT the same mini-fig that appears on the box and instead has
Addidas logos on both the legs and torso and a pre-printed #10 on the back
of the torso.  The yellow bricks that identify the point values for the
target goal are also pre-printed, one with "10", two with "5".  The target
goal itself consists of three white train window frames.  The set also • comes
with two soccer balls which are the same as those from the World Cup sets.

Actually, at least the box I got does show the Adidas player on the box, The
minifig also has the player's name on the back, "Zidane", and the box has a
picture of a real player, so I'll depend on one of the world football fans
to tell me which team he's on (well - just did a search, looks like he's a
top player for France, even has his own website http://www.zidane.com ). I
don't know if the mini-fig face has been used before, but it actually bears
a passing resemblance to the real Zidane's face (or at least his hair).

The black handle has two LEGO connections. The end is a tiny axle pin
(though it is a little tighter, a wheel pinned to it doesn't spin freely).
Sticking out the bottom is a ball and socket ball. The shaft also has a
cross section close to a Technic axle, though you can't use it. Oh,  it's
also part number 30483...

The player holder which connects to the handle is part number 30488. The FUB
is part 30492 and has a Technic pin hole in it. The player holder which fits
in the FUB is 3 parts, the main holder is the same 30488 part. There is also
a spring, and a piece with the Technic pin which holds the spring in. Part
30488 will plug into the space in the center of a 2x2 stud pattern if it is
not attached to the pin and spring unit.

On the bottom of the FUB, at each corner is shaped like the bottom of a 2x2
brick (i.e. 2x2 area, 1 tube, 8 thin ridges). Between each corner along the
side is a slightly raised area which will allow pairs of FUBs to be
connected underneath by 2x4 plates (in addition to the 2x2 tile on top).

One other nice thing. The carrying box/goal box works MUCH better than the
Throwbots case as a box. The clear part is part 30502 while the cover is
part 30501. Neither of these parts has any particular LEGO building element
connectivity, though the clear part does have a pair of ridges which do fit
pretty well between a row of studs.

The back of the instructions has a full catalog of all the football sets.
I'm not sure if anyone has noticed before, but set 3410, {field and player
add on} has 2 white 2x2x2 "minfig dress" slopes. There would also appear to
be an 8x16 FUB from the pictures of set 3409.

The set also included a catalog sheet which shows just set 3409 (in addition
to Train, Arctic, Star Wars, Adventurers, and LEGO Software and the web site
URLs. The football section also clearly highlights that Zidane and Adidas
are part of the promotion (3409 comes with a bunch of Adidas stickers for
the field walls). It looks like Zidane's first name is Zinedine.

I picked up a copy of 3401 Shoot 'N Score ((URL) this morning at the Zany-Brainy in Raleigh (NC). It is the first Soccer set I have seen from the new range. I have a couple copies of the World Cup promo set which overall I like much better but I (...) (24 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.reviews)
